Overview

Coloured Skin follows Scout, a bipolar chameleon, navigating the complexities of a rigid grayscale world where conformity reigns. As a racialize Deaf person, Scout struggles to fit into a society that values uniformity, hiding their true emotions and shifting between identities to meet the expectations of others. However, the weight of suppressing their feelings—happiness, grief, anger—builds up, eventually causing an emotional explosion from a seemingly trivial conflict.

Through mask work, physical movement, and bilingual storytelling American Sign Language (ASL), Signing Exact English (SEE), Plains Indian Sign Language (PISL) and spoken English. The film explores the intersectionality of identity, mental health, and societal pressures. Scout’s journey of self- reflection and self-acceptance becomes a powerful metaphor for the difficulties faced by those who are marginalized and struggle to reconcile personal authenticity with the need for acceptance in a society that prizes conformity.

The project is a unique blend of experimental Deaf filmmaking and theatre, emphasizing visual storytelling and exploring the emotional depth of Scout’s inner conflict. The film aims to challenge traditional narratives, offering an inclusive and accessible viewing experience that engages with themes of mental health, identity crises, and the importance of embracing individuality.
